Signage

  • Abandoned sign removal

    Signs on vacant property for 2 years are abandoned; owner given 15 days notice to remove.

  • Electronic message sign allowed districts

    Electronic message signs are allowed in all commercial, industrial, resort development, and planned unit development districts.

  • Electronic message sign brightness100 NITS

    Brightness limited to a maximum of 100 NITS between sunset and sunrise, with photocell dimming.

  • Electronic message sign count1 per parcel

    Only one electronic message sign is allowed per parcel.

  • Electronic message signs may not exceed eight feet in height from normal ground level.

  • Electronic message signs may not exceed 32 square feet in overall size and the electronic display may not be more than 50 percent of this area.

    Messages must be static for 20 seconds or longer; no animation, videos, flashing, or scrolling text.

  • Exempt sign types

    Advertising vehicle, agricultural product, auction, banner, commemorative plaque, commercial flag, construction, estate, farm, flags, home occupation, incidental, legal devices, marquee message change, menu (≤30 sq ft), noncommercial flag, political campaign, private drive, public, special advertising, special decorative, temporary directional, temporary, traffic, real estate, residential, warning, window.

  • Dark sky lighting

    All lighting must comply with dark sky lighting standards.

  • No direct glare

    No light from any illuminated sign shall cause direct glare on any adjoining property, right-of-way, or building other than the building to which the sign applies.

  • Internally illuminated sign UL label

    Internally illuminated signs must have U.L. label and building inspector approval.

  • Nonconforming sign damaged ≤50% may be restored within 2 years; >50% must be removed.

  • Obsolete sign removal30 days

    Obsolete signs shall be removed within 30 days.

  • Sign permit expiration12 months

    Sign permit expires if sign not erected within 12 months.

  • Flashing signs; signs obscuring traffic signs; signs using 'stop' or 'danger'; signs obstructing windows/doors; signs violating state law; political signs on county property; signs violating state/federal laws; signs creating safety hazards.

  • Projecting sign clearance10 ft

    No part of any sign projecting more than 12 inches from any wall shall be less than ten feet above ground; over vehicle travel lanes, not less than 14 feet.

  • Signs are exempt from setback requirements in all zones, provided they do not interfere with vehicular sight distances.

  • Sign area measurement

    Sign area measured as smallest area encompassing letters, figures, etc., two-sided counted as one.

  • Sign height measured from normal grade to highest point including base.

  • Waiver limit100 percent

    Waivers cannot increase number, size, or height of signs by more than 100% of ordinance standard.
