• Auction sign display period30 days

  The sign(s) shall not be erected more than thirty (30) days prior to the auction and shall be removed on the following day.

• Bulletin board standards

  One (1) bulletin board, not exceeding twenty (20) square feet in area, is permitted. Permitted uses with more than one (1) road frontage may erect one (1) additional bulletin board on each road frontage with a maximum area of forty (40) square feet. Height shall not exceed ten (10) feet and a minimum setback of fifteen (15) feet.

  Signs identifying shopping centers with multiple tenants shall be limited to one (1) freestanding sign, either single or double faced, per street frontage, each not to exceed fifty (50) square feet.

• Electronic message board standards

  Electronic message board signs may be permitted by special exception. Must not have appearance of motion, flashing, blinking. May consist only of alphabetic or numeric characters on plain background. Message may change no more than every 8 seconds. Primary display area max 3 lines, 45 characters per line. Must be incorporated into monument or freestanding ground style sign. Area occupied by message may comprise no more than 50% of surface area. Only one electronic message board with at most 2 sides permitted on lots with 100 feet or more of VDOT maintained road frontage. Equipped with dimmer to 500 candelas. Must be turned off between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. if visible from residential structures in R-1, R-2, R-3, A-1, or FC districts. Must maintain 1000-foot setback from historic landmarks and Fincastle town boundary.

  A flag shall not exceed twenty-five (25) square feet in area or be displayed at a height that exceeds the building height for the use district.

• Freestanding ground sign standards

  Signs shall have a maximum height of seven (7) feet with a maximum aggregate of one (1) square foot per five (5) linear feet of street frontage, up to a maximum size of forty (40) square feet. There shall be no more than thirty (30) inches clearance from the bottom of the sign to the ground below.

• Freestanding monument sign standards

  Signs shall not exceed ten (10) feet in height and a minimum setback of fifteen (15) feet. Maximum aggregate size of a freestanding monument sign shall be one (1) square foot per five (5) linear feet of street frontage, up to a maximum size of sixty (60) square feet.

• Freestanding pole sign standards

  If a lot is located within one thousand (1,000) linear feet of the centerline of a grade-separated intersection of a four-lane, divided, limited access highway, one (1) freestanding pole sign shall be permitted with a minimum height of fifty (50) feet and a maximum of eighty (80) feet, and the area of such sign may be increased to two hundred (200) square feet under the condition that no other on-premises freestanding signs shall be located upon the property, except one (1) freestanding monument not exceeding thirty-two (32) square feet in area.

  A home occupation or home business shall be permitted one (1) sign not to exceed two (2) square feet. Height of sign shall not exceed six (6) feet and the minimum setback shall be five (5) feet.

• Kiosk sign standards

  A kiosk maximum height shall be ten (10) feet; maximum size sixty (60) square feet inclusive of all sign faces of the kiosk. Kiosk lighting may only be by external illumination. Kiosk signs must have a three hundred-foot separation from other kiosk signs and may only be utilized in developments when ten (10) or more businesses are located in the development.
