  • Elements of architectural compatibility

    The architectural review board shall consider the following elements of architectural compatibility: general design, character and appropriateness of design, form, proportion and scale, mass, configuration, arrangement, texture, material, color, relationship to similar features in immediate surroundings, and prevention of developments not in harmony with prevailing characteristics.

  • Certificate of appropriateness required for exterior work

    No building permit under the provisions of the building code shall hereafter be issued for the erection, construction, alteration or restoration of the exterior of any building or structure, including signs, or part thereof, within a historic area, unless and until the applicant shall have secured a certificate of appropriateness from the architectural review board.

  • Certificate of appropriateness required for demolition, razing, or moving

    The demolition, razing or moving of any building or structure located within a historic area shall be permitted if, and only if, the owner has secured a certificate of appropriateness.

  • Protective maintenance required

    The owner of any building or structure, which is located within a historic area, shall keep such structure properly maintained and repaired. The degree of maintenance and repair required is that sufficient to prevent all permanent damage to structural components and/or exterior by foreseeable forces including weather, fire, and termites.

  • Exemption for work not subject to public view

    These requirements shall not apply when the work proposed would not be subject to public view from a street or other public place.

  • Maximum duration of temporary certificate of appropriateness5 years

    No such temporary certificate shall be issued to allow the proposed work to exist for a period longer than five (5) years.
