- Sign permit exemptions
No permit shall be required for: (1) Changing the copy or message of an existing conforming sign... (2) Repainting, cleaning, or other normal maintenance... (3) Signs which are not visible from a public street or sidewalk... (4) Signs erected by a governmental entity... (5) Signs required to be maintained by law... (6) Flags of the United States, the Commonwealth of Virginia, or any other governmental entity... (7) Signs which are an integral part of a vending machine, fuel pump, or similar device... (8) Signs which are not visible from a public street or sidewalk and which are located on the interior of a building... A sign permit shall expire if the work authorized by the permit is not commenced within six months from the date of issuance, or if the work is not completed within one year from the date of issuance.
