Chapter 6.34 - Domestic Swine#

6.34.010 - Keeping of domestic swine.#

No person shall keep or maintain within the city any domestic Vietnamese potbellied pig (PBP) which is more than 18 inches at the shoulder or which weighs more than 95 pounds.§ No other species of pig or hog may be permitted to be kept or maintained with the city.§ Vietnamese potbellied pigs within these limitations may be kept as household pets on property on which there is an occupied single-family dwelling, subject to the provisions and restrictions of this chapter and title.

6.34.020 - Minimum lot area.#

(a) No person shall keep or maintain any PBP in or about any duplex, triplex, fourplex, mobile home park or apartment unit.§

(b) No person shall keep or maintain any PBP in or about a single-family dwelling located on a lot of less than 6,000 square feet.§

(c) No person shall keep or maintain two PBPs in or about a single-family dwelling located on a lot less than 10,000 square feet.§

6.34.030 - Number of domestic swine.#

No person shall keep or maintain more than two Vietnamese potbellied pigs.§

6.34.040 - Domestic swine to be spayed/neutered.#

No person shall keep or maintain any male Vietnamese potbellied pig that has not been neutered or any female PBP that has not been spayed.§

6.34.050 - Vaccinations.#

Every Vietnamese potbellied pig kept under the provisions of this chapter and title shall have an annual leptospirosis vaccination.§

6.34.060 - Minimum yard area.#

Any person who keeps or maintains any Vietnamese potbellied pig in the city shall provide in the rear yard of the single-family dwelling at which the PBP is kept, an outdoor, paved and securely fenced enclosure of no less than 120 square feet.§ The PBP shall be restricted to the enclosure while out-of-doors, unless on a leash or tether under the control of a person physically capable of retaining control of the animal.

6.34.070 - License required.#

It is unlawful for any person to maintain within the city a Vietnamese potbellied pig without first obtaining a license authorizing the maintaining of such PBP within the city.§

6.34.080 - License—Issuance.#

(a) The license required by this chapter shall be issued upon satisfaction of all of the following requirements:

(1) Payment of a fee in the amount established by resolution of the council;

(2) Showing proof of current leptospirosis vaccination for the PBP to be licensed under this title;

(3) Certification that the PBP has been spayed or neutered;

(4) Certification by the chief of animal control that the premises were the PBP is or is to be kept and maintained, comply with the provisions of this title and chapter and are clean and sanitary; and

(5) Determination of the chief of animal control, upon a review of the number and nature of complaints and citations filed against the applicant concerning maintenance and treatment of animals regulated by this title, that the applicant is not likely to violate this title or create a nuisance in the keeping and maintaining of Vietnamese potbellied pigs during the term of a license.

(b) The license shall be issued for a period not to exceed 12 months, commencing upon the date of application, and shall be renewed annually for as long as the PBP is kept or maintained.

6.34.090 - Fees—Penalty for nonpayment.#

(a) The license fee shall be paid on the date of application. The license fee shall become due on the expiration of the current license. Any person failing to procure and pay for such license on or before the due date shall pay a late fee in the amount established by resolution of the council as a penalty for such failure. Such late fee shall be in addition to the license fee payable for the Vietnamese potbellied pig.

(b) Any person who acquires ownership, custody or control of a PBP not currently licensed pursuant to this title shall be immediately liable for payment of the license fee.

6.34.100 - Identification tags.#

The chief of animal control for Placer County shall annually procure and issue one permanent, serial numbered Vietnamese potbellied pig license tag stamped with the name of the county for each PBP licensed under this chapter. Such tags shall only be issued upon the application of the owners who have complied with the provisions of this title. The license tag shall be permanently issued for each PBP and shall remain with the PBP.

6.34.110 - Collars.#

Every Vietnamese potbellied pig shall be provided by the owner with a suitable collar, harness or other device to which the PBP license tag shall be attached.§

6.34.120 - Lost license tags—Replacement fee.#

In the event a license tag is lost from the body of any Vietnamese potbellied pig for which the same was issued, the owner shall, within ten days thereafter, procure another license tag for the PBP from the Placer County chief of animal control for which he or she shall pay a fee in the amount established by resolution. As often as any license tag is lost, the same shall be replaced in the same manner as provided in this section.

6.34.130 - Renewal notices.#

The Placer County chief of animal control shall mail renewal notices to the owners of Vietnamese potbellied pigs whose licenses are due to expire the following month.
