Signage

• Sidewalk signs must comply with ADA

  The sign placement shall not prevent the sidewalk from being accessible as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, nor shall it cause the unobstructed, clear-path of the walkway to be less than four feet (4') in width.

• Attachments to sidewalk signs prohibitedProhibitedNot allowed in the district at all, short of rezoning or a variance.

  No temporary posters, letters, flyers, balloons, pennants, flags, or other attention-getting devices may be attached to the sign. Mobile or moving sign copy or sign parts shall not be permitted.

• Sidewalk signs must be durable, not glass

  Sidewalk signs shall be constructed of durable materials, sufficient to withstand inclement weather, as well as color fading due to sunlight. Sidewalk signs shall not be constructed of glass.

• Maximum area for sidewalk signs6 sqftsq ftSquare feet. An acre is 43,560 sq ft; a typical suburban lot is 7,000–10,000.

  Sign area shall not exceed 6 square feet (e.g., each face of a double-sided or A-frame sign).

• Maximum distance from main entrance30 ft

  and not more than thirty feet (30') from the main customer/client entrance or service window of the establishment.

• Maximum distance from front of establishment15 ft

  The placement of sidewalk signs shall be limited to a location within fifteen feet (15') of the front (i.e., between the imaginary extension of the side walls of the building) of the establishment to which it refers

  Maximum height shall be 4 feet.

• Maximum width for sidewalk signs2.5 ft

  nor shall it cause the unobstructed, clear-path of the walkway to be less than four feet (4') in width.

• Minimum distance from curbs, driveways, parking lots2 ft

  No sign shall be located within or closer than two feet (2') from curbs, driveways, parking lots or any other vehicular circulation or parking surfaces.

• Minimum separation between sidewalk signs30 ft

  two sidewalk signs may be authorized provided that the two signs are no closer than 30 feet to one another.

• Sidewalk owner approval required for common areas

  When such sign is to be located on a sidewalk or walkway not under the sole control of the business owner, such as on a walkway within the common area of a multi-tenant shopping center or retail complex, the application for approval shall be accompanied by documentation indicating that the sidewalk owner has approved the use, design and placement of the sign.

• Sidewalk signs in public right-of-way prohibitedProhibitedNot allowed in the district at all, short of rezoning or a variance.

  No such sign shall be permitted within a public road right-of-way.

• Sidewalk signs must be removed when business closed

  The sign must be removed from the sidewalk or display location during times when the identified business establishment is closed. Storage during non-business hours shall be indoors.

• Sidewalk signs must be weighted to prevent hazard

  The sign shall be of sufficient weight to prevent it from becoming a hazard in windy conditions or from being overturned by contact. Weights, if required, must be incorporated into the sign design and construction. The use of sandbags, bricks or similar items to add weight to the sign is not allowed.

• Sidewalk signs per establishment1 count

  One non-illuminated sidewalk sign is allowed per commercial establishment having an exterior customer/client entrance.

• Sidewalk signs for shared entrance2 count

  In the event a structure houses multiple businesses sharing a common customer entrance, two sidewalk signs may be authorized provided that the two signs are no closer than 30 feet to one another.
