  • Anchoring to prevent flotation

    All new construction and substantial improvement shall be designed (or modified) and adequately anchored to prevent flotation, collapse, or lateral movement of the structure resulting from hydrodynamic and hydrostatic loads, including the effects of buoyancy.

  • Base flood elevation data for large subdivisions

    All subdivision proposals greater than 25 lots or five acres, whichever is the lesser, shall include base flood elevation data.

  • Construction methods to minimize flood damage

    Be constructed by methods and practices that minimize flood damages.

  • Contour interval for slopes less than 20%2 ft

    Property with slopes less than 20 percent shall show contours at intervals of two feet.

  • Critical electrical installations elevation

    All electric water heaters, electric furnaces and other critical electrical installations shall be permitted only at elevations at or above the level of the 100-year flood.

  • Openings for enclosed areas below lowest floor

    A minimum of two openings having a total net area of not less than one square inch for every square foot of enclosed area subject to flooding shall be provided. The bottom of all openings shall be no higher than one foot above grade.

  • No-rise requirement in Zones A1-30 and AE

    Until a regulatory floodway is designated, no new construction, substantial improvements, or other development (including fill) shall be permitted within Zones A1-30 and AE on the community's FIRM, unless it is demonstrated that the cumulative effect of the proposed development, when combined with all other existing and anticipated development, will not increase the water surface elevation of the base flood more than one foot at any point within the community.

  • Residential lowest floor elevation

    All residential structures shall have the lowest floor (including basement) elevated to or above the base flood level, unless the community is granted an exception by the Federal Insurance Administrator for the allowance of basements in accordance with 44 CFR 60.6(b) or (c).

  • Flood damage resistant materials

    Be constructed with materials resistant to flood damage.

  • Nonresidential floodproofing

    All nonresidential structures shall (i) have the lowest floor (including basement) elevated to or above the base flood level or, (ii) together with attendant utility and sanitary facilities, be designed so that below the base flood level the structure is watertight with walls substantially impermeable to the passage of water and with structural components having the capability of resisting hydrostatic and hydrodynamic loads and effects of buoyancy.

  • Service facilities flood protection

    Be constructed with electrical, heating, ventilation, plumbing, and air conditioning equipment and other service facilities that are designed and/or located so as to prevent water from entering or accumulating within the components during conditions of flooding.

  • Sanitary sewer design

    All new or replacement sanitary sewer facilities and private package sewage treatment plants, including all pumping stations and collector systems, shall be designed to minimize or eliminate infiltration of floodwaters into the systems and discharges from the systems into the floodwaters.

  • Storm drainage design

    All storm drainage facilities shall be designed to convey the flow of surface waters without damage to persons or property. The system shall ensure drainage away from buildings and on-site waste disposal sites.

  • Utility placement in floodprone areas

    All utilities such as gas lines, electrical and telephone systems being placed in floodprone areas should be located, elevated, where possible, and constructed to minimize the chance of impairment during a flooding occurrence.

  • Water facility design

    All new or replacement water facilities shall be designed to minimize or eliminate infiltration of floodwaters into the system and shall be located and constructed to minimize or eliminate flood damages.

All new construction and substantial improvements that are located in the flood hazard district shall be designed in accordance with flood protection requirements of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
