Signage

• Directional sign maximum area3 sqftsq ftSquare feet. An acre is 43,560 sq ft; a typical suburban lot is 7,000–10,000.

  Signs displayed for the direction or convenience of the public, including restrooms, telephones, handicapped parking, etc., provided such signs do not exceed a total surface area of three (3) square feet per sign.

• Exempt signs

  Exemptions include: government signs, commemorative plaques, flags, address signs, seasonal displays, official notices, private property signs (max 1.5 sq ft), maintenance, copy changes, traffic control signs, real estate signs (max 6 sq ft residential, 32 sq ft other, height 6 ft), political signs, directional signs (max 3 sq ft), vehicle signs, sandwich boards (max 9 sq ft per side), parking lot signs (max 4 sq ft), window stickers, murals, historic restorations, event signs, open/closed signs (max 4 sq ft).

• Freestanding sign projection

  The location of all freestanding signs, where permitted, in no instance may project beyond any property line, except within the C-UB District where a building with an allowed zero front setback installs a building-mounted sign or awning overhanging the public sidewalk.

• Informational sign maximum area15 sqftsq ftSquare feet. An acre is 43,560 sq ft; a typical suburban lot is 7,000–10,000.

  One informational sign or bulletin board customarily incidental to places of worship, libraries, museums, social clubs or societies shall be permitted per parcel, provided such sign is wall mounted and does not exceed fifteen (15) square feet.

• Maximum thickness of double-faced signs18 inches

  The thickness or distance between faces of double-faced signs shall not exceed eighteen (18) inches.

• Open/closed sign maximum area4 sqftsq ftSquare feet. An acre is 43,560 sq ft; a typical suburban lot is 7,000–10,000.

  Open/closed signs, or similar, not exceeding four (4) square feet provided that the sign is located inside the structure.

• Parking lot sign maximum area4 sqftsq ftSquare feet. An acre is 43,560 sq ft; a typical suburban lot is 7,000–10,000.

  Wall or ground signs in a private parking lot to identify entrances, exits and divisions, provided each sign does not exceed four (4) square feet in area.

• Private property sign maximum area1.5 sqftsq ftSquare feet. An acre is 43,560 sq ft; a typical suburban lot is 7,000–10,000.

  One 'Private Property,' 'No Trespassing,' 'Beware of Dog,' or similar sign, not exceeding one and one-half square feet in area.

  Prohibited: signs violating law, obstructing doors/fire escapes, flashing/intermittent lights, exposed tubing, obscuring traffic signs, using stop/danger words, structurally unsafe, portable (unless permitted), sound-producing, obscene, causing glare, attached to poles/trees, attached to chimney/tower above height limits, located in public right-of-way except C-UB with zero setback.

• Real estate sign maximum area in other districts32 sqftsq ftSquare feet. An acre is 43,560 sq ft; a typical suburban lot is 7,000–10,000.

  One temporary real estate sign shall not exceed thirty-two (32) square feet in area in any other district.

• Real estate sign maximum area in residential districts6 sqftsq ftSquare feet. An acre is 43,560 sq ft; a typical suburban lot is 7,000–10,000.

  One temporary real estate sign shall not exceed six (6) square feet in area in any residential district.

  Real estate sign shall not exceed six (6) feet in height.

  One two-sided sandwich board or A-frame sign, not to exceed nine (9) square feet per side, advertising a permitted commercial use, displayed only during business hours.

• Sign permit required

  Except as provided in this section, no sign shall be erected, installed, used, altered, painted, relocated, replaced or reconstructed until a sign permit has been issued by the zoning administrator.

• Temporary event sign display duration30 days

  Such sign may be maintained for a period not more than one month and shall be removed within five (5) days after the advertised event.

• Temporary event sign maximum percentage of permanent sign area50 percent

  Temporary signs for civic/philanthropic events may not exceed fifty (50) percent of the total permanent sign area allowed.
