  • Prohibition on additional uses

    No property owner may offer as a short-term rental any property that is also used for a family day home, group home, assisted living facility, massage therapy, or taxi or other carrier service.

  • No check-in/out between 11pm and 7am

    The property owner may not offer check-in or check-out services to short-term renters between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

  • Only one (1) short-term rental, owner-occupied, is permitted per GPIN or parcel.

  • At least one renter 18 or older

    No property owner may provide a short-term rental unless at least one (1) of the short-term renters is eighteen (18) years of age or older.

  • Occupancy limit 2x bedrooms or 10

    The occupancy of any property during a short-term rental may not exceed a number equal to twice the number of bedrooms in the dwelling but in no case shall exceed the occupancy allowed by the septic system permit, if applicable, or ten (10) occupants total.

  • Owner-occupied requires 185 days occupancy185 days

    Only a dwelling that is occupied by the property owner for at least 185 days per year may be offered for short-term rental.

  • Parking 1 per guestroom

    One (1) off-street parking space must be provided for each guestroom, in addition to those parking spaces required for the principal dwelling.

  • Pet limit per Chapter 4

    At no time shall there be more pets on the property than permitted by chapter 4 of the Hanover County Code.

  • Posting of information required

    The property owner must conspicuously post the following information in any property offered for short-term rental: property address, contact info, emergency shut-off instructions, recycling/trash schedules, and noise ordinance.

  • Record of rentals for 2 years

    The property owner must keep an accurate and complete record of each short-term rental for two (2) years from the ending date of the rental and provide those records to the planning director for inspection upon the director's request.

  • Annual registration required

    All operators must register annually with the planning department by paying the registration fee established by the board and completing a registration form.

  • Smoke detectors and safety equipment

    The property owner of any property offered for short-term rental must provide and maintain in good working order every smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher, and any other safety equipment required to be in the short-term rental by the Building Code or other applicable law.
