Design

  • Design and lighting

    Towers shall either maintain a galvanized steel finish or be painted a neutral color. Buildings and related structures shall use materials, colors, textures, screening, and landscaping to blend with natural setting. Antennas on structures must be neutral color compatible with supporting structure. Towers shall not be artificially lighted unless required by FAA. No advertising of any type may be placed on tower or accompanying facility unless part of retrofitting existing sign structure.

  • Exemptions

    Amateur radio antennas operated by federally licensed amateur radio station operator or receive only antennas are exempt. Antennas and towers used exclusively for television reception for residential structures are exempt.

  • The requirements set forth in these regulations shall govern the location of towers that exceed, and antennas that are installed at greater than 100 feet in height.

  • Inventory of existing sites

    Each applicant for an antenna and/or tower shall provide to the Accomack County Department of Building, Planning, and Zoning an inventory of its existing facilities within the locality or within five miles of the border, including location, height, existing use, and available capacity.

  • Placement on existing structures

    The placement of an antenna on or in an existing structure such as a building, sign, light pole, water tank, or other free-standing structure or existing tower or pole shall be permitted by right so long as the addition of said antenna shall not add more than 20 feet in height to said structure or tower and shall not require additional lighting pursuant to FAA or applicable requirements.

  • Replacement of existing towers

    Any tower or antenna existing prior to adoption or subsequently approved may be replaced, by right, with a tower or antenna of similar type so long as the replacement structure is no more than 20 feet higher than the structure being replaced. The tower being replaced must be removed within one month of completion. Replacement exceeding 20 feet higher considered new structure.
