  • Changeable copy limit20 pct

    Non-electronic changeable copy shall represent no more than 20 percent of total allowable sign area. Copy shall not be changed more than once every 24 hours.

  • Exempt sign types

    Address signs conforming to Building Code; commercial displays on vehicles; flags (max 1 per lot, max height 30 ft, max size 48 sq ft); interior signs; mobile vendor signs (max 8 sq ft); official notices; public carrier graphics; small signs (<4 sq ft); traffic control signs; window signs in non-residential districts (max 25% of window area).

  • Illumination standards

    Sign lighting must not create nuisance. External light sources must be shielded and filtered per Table 15.04.609.090-J(2). Light sources shall be hard-wired fluorescent or equal efficiency; incandescent prohibited except historic. Illuminated signs adjacent to residential areas shall be controlled by rheostat.

  • Materials requirement

    Signs shall be made of sturdy, durable materials. Paper, cardboard, or other rapid-deterioration materials only for temporary signs. Fabric signs restricted to awnings, canopies, flags, and temporary signs.

  • Message substitution

    A noncommercial message may be substituted for any commercial message without additional approval, subject to limitations.

  • Permitted sign locations

    Building signs must be parallel to building wall, canopy fascia, or mansard roof. Window signs must be within 24 inches of inner surface. Under canopy signs require 7 ft clearance (8 ft over public right-of-way). Pylon/monument signs oriented toward parking lot, mall, street, driveway, alley. Building signs shall not project more than 12 inches from building face.

  • Animated, flashing, blinking, reflecting, revolving, or other similar sign with visibly moving or rotating parts; air-activated graphics; commercial mascots; electronic signs and digital displays except fuel price signs and readerboards; general advertising; outdoor advertising displays (billboards); mobile billboards; roof signs; search lights and klieg lights; signs in public right-of-way without encroachment permit; signs on doors/windows/fire escapes; signs creating traffic hazard; signs producing noise/emissions; snipe signs.

  • Sign area calculation

    Sign area includes entire area within a single continuous perimeter enclosing all sign elements. Double-faced signs with faces <=2 ft apart or <=45 degrees count as one face. Multi-faced signs sum areas as specified. Three-dimensional signs use sum of two adjacent sides of smallest cube.

  • Clearance from utilities

    Signs and supporting structures shall maintain clearance from electrical conductors, communications equipment, lines, underground facilities and conduits.

In all zones, only such signs as are specifically permitted in this Article may be placed, erected, maintained, displayed or used, and the placement, erection, maintenance, display or use of signs shall be subject to all restrictions, limitations and regulations contained in this Article.
