ARTICLE XVII - ADDITIONAL USE REGULATIONS#

Sec. 36-759. - Residential chicken keeping.#

The keeping of up to six female chickens (hens) shall be permitted as an accessory use to a single-family residence, subject to the standards set out in chapter 6, article II in the following districts: R-1, R-2, R-3 and MHP-1. Residential use types may include the following accessory structures on the same site or lot:

(1) Coops and chicken enclosures, provided they are set back at least ten feet from side and rear property lines and at least 50 feet from any residential dwelling on an adjacent lot. Coops and chicken enclosures shall also be located behind the front building line of the principal structure. Coops shall provide at least two square feet of interior space per chicken, and chicken enclosures shall provide at least ten square feet of exterior space per chicken, with a maximum total area of 150 square feet for both the coop and chicken enclosure. Neither the coop nor the chicken enclosure shall exceed ten feet in height.

(2) No such accessory use shall be permitted on any lot until the lot owner has first obtained a zoning permit.
